Waterproofing can be dangerous.
Waterproofing is one of the most dangerous of tasks on a building or roof.
It involves gas, fire and extreme heat. These all pose dangers to the site worker operating the equipment.
Firstly, personal protective equipment is essential – heat resistant glove, safety eyewear, and fire extinguishers placed close to the action.
And, secondly, waterproofing around substructures and especially full bores create further risks as flames can catch onto flammable material and literally run away causing significant damage.
It is best to have a health and safety officer assess the risks prior to any torch-on waterproofing commencing to ensure all risks are catered for and safety measures applied.
Building owners must be aware that waterproofing should not be taken lightly. And so it is best to seek the advice of a health and safety officer.
Buildings mostly have complicated roofing structures. As a result, all carry with them, and consequently, certain risks when using torch on membranes for waterproofing.
There are known cases where fires have been triggered in lower floors from the gas flame throwers used in torch-on methodologies. It is best to have a risk assessment done by qualified health & safety officers.
As such it is advisable that they are qualified as SACPCMP health and safety officer.
